Show report for 2009 NYBS in Louisville, KY. 10-31-09

National Shortface Tumbler Club Show Results for the 2009 NYBS in Louisville KY. On Oct.31st.

The National Shortface Tumbler Club once again sponsored the Shortface Meet at the NYBS in 2009. We had a great turn out with over 100 of the finest young shortface birds bred and shown by a dozen of the country’s top shortface breeders. The birds where in pretty fair condition considering that it was a baby show, and most birds had a late molt this year.

Judging the show this year was our own Master Breeder, Dave Fhagen. He did a great job of handling and evaluating the birds and measuring them up to the standards. He faced a real challenge in selecting the Best Squarehead and Best Roundhead awards. The Best Crested award clearly went to the Red Ancient which went on to win the Show Champion place above all others. Congratulations to Wayne Diviney for breeding this marvelous specimen. The Reserve Champion award went to a beautiful White Self Budapest light beak entered by Bogdan Wasilewski. This bird also won the Best Squarehead award. You can always count on Bogdan to have some great birds at the shows.

The Best Roundhead award went to a real nice English Shortface Tumbler Kite Shown by Carl Miller. Carl is making great progress with his Shortface birds, and we expect to see more of his accomplishments in our upcoming shows.

We thank all of our exhibitors for the good turnout, and look forward to seeing you all at our upcoming shows in Greenville, SC on 11-21-09, and at the Reading Winter Classic in Lancaster, PA. on 1-17-2010.

Here now are the Show results for the NYBS-2009 Shortface Meet.

                                 Judge's Report

The Lancaster 2008 Winter Show

I was pleased to be asked to judge the National Short Face Club show held in conjunction with the Lancaster Meet on Saturday, January 12, 2008 because I am a member of both clubs and have been attending that show since the beginning of time.  It is one of the finest East Coast shows that we have.

When I was approached to judge the show I did not expect the number of birds that came before me (nearly 300), but I did expect the quality to be there.  When I knew the entries were high I just asked Ed Borg to have the stewards ready so I could have birds being placed before me on a regular schedule and cages being emptied so I could show the birds off to the exhibitors and comment on the specimens and explain to the crowd why I was making the decisions I was making.

Unfortunately, some of the very best specimens were still moulting and in a winter show they should be finished and in hard feather. I guess the warm fall and winter weather from global warming or breeding late caused that to happen this year.   There were too many nice specimens that actually would have placed higher if they were in show condition.

Every breed had several specimens that were very close to their standard of perfection, so that made my job much easier and I was very impressed with the outstanding top three birds in each class. Any one who owned those birds could be quite proud of their accomplishments.  As most of you know already, I am quite critical of what a champion pigeon should be and follow the standard to the intent that they were written for.   I, also, know that judges can make or break a breed.

The three major categories: Best Round Head, Best Crest, and Best Squarehead had champions representing the breeds.   These three birds were nearly perfect.   The Berliner has excellent color, type, head and zittered continuously.   The Helmet had excellent color, type and head and was in extremely good condition—it is not easy to keep a white bird in pristine condition.   The Budapest Stork was just phenomenal – I have never seen a stork of this quality in this country or in the European countries either.  This bird was a magnet and attracted much attention.   I understand after I left the show that this bird went on to win the entire show of 2400 pigeons.  Can you imagine that?   A short face pigeon of any kind “rocking” the world of long face pigeons!!!!!  Unbelievable!  I am glad I was part of it.

The show was well run.  Ed Borg did a fantastic job of organizing the classes and moving them along.  Dave Fhagen and Emil Piergiorgi killed himselves with stewarding most of the birds with some assistance.   I think that there could have been more people helping in this area.  The people who assisted did a great job, but the number of exhibitors there could have demonstrated a greater degree of cooperation.  After all every one should have fun at the show and contribute their fair share of work.  Placing the birds in a show cage and walking away is not my idea of exhibiting—there is a larger picture that needs to be painted.

It was nice to see old friends and to know first hand that the breeds are flourishing.   Anyone who participated in the Lancaster 2008 Show can be proud of their accomplishments.

The only way that the birds can continue to flourish is if we share birds with one another. When you share stock, individual breeds will be stronger and more numerous and the color varieties will increase. Some of us need to expand to another breed and to help the established dedicated breeders maintain the breed so others can enjoy them as well.   This should ensure beautiful short face pigeons, beautiful shows in the future and a short face hobby that is on very solid ground.

I will close with the thought that we need to continue to teach one another about the fine points of each breed.  Whenever I have the opportunity to judge I try and turn the experience into a teaching session.   Any one who is not exhibiting birds is welcome to sit with me while I am judging so that they become familiar with and understand the breed before them.  Thank you for the challenge of judging the entire show and being part of a very nice day.

Have a great breeding season.

Mike Seiler

Show Results for the National Shortface Tumbler Meet at the Reading Pigeon Club Annual Winter Show Held on January 11th thru the 13th.

The National Shortface Tumbler Club held it’s annual open Show with participation and in conjunction with the Empire Short Face and American Short Face Tumbler Clubs.

This show brought together 280 of some of the finest short face tumblers in the country. There where 22 exhibitors , some of whom where long term recognized Master Breeders. The quality and condition of the birds in all the classes was excellent, which shows that the exhibitors took pride in their birds and made the effort to prepare them for this major competitive event. There was considerable anticipation to learn how the judging would be handled when so many fine short face birds would be in the show (280 ). Many thought that the task would be too much for one judge to handle in one day, however, after much discussion, it was decided that with the cooperation of the exhibitors and their willingness to help in stewarding the birds, it could be accomplished. The judge selected to do the job was internationally recognized Master Breeder and Master Judge of all Short Face Breeds, Michael Seiler.

On Saturday morning, the show secretary assigned the responsibility for organizing and supervising the stewards to David Fhagen, a long time short face Master Breeder of many short face breeds. With Dave’s experience and knowledge in running shows, he was a tremendous asset and was able to organize five teams of stewards made up of 20 short face exhibitors. There were 4 members per team, two teams of square head exhibitors, and two teams of roundhead exhibitors, with one team of crested bird exhibitors. The show secretary then scheduled the order of the judging so that the square head teams could steward when the roundhead birds where being judged, and the roundhead teams could steward while the square head birds were being judged. It was estimated that the show would require that each steward would need to be available for stewarding for about 1 ½ hours, and all exhibitors would be free to watch as their birds were being judged, and still have ample time to walk around and enjoy the show. With a few exceptions , this worked out well and most exhibitors willingly took their turns at stewarding and cooperated with Dave. Some went beyond their call and voluntarily extended their services. To them I offer my sincerest thanks , for without the services of Dave Fhagen and the teams of stewards doing their jobs, this show would have taken much longer to complete. As it turned out, we began the judging at 9:30 am, and finished at 4:30 pm.

Michael Seiler, as usual did a masterful job of handling every bird and pointing out the features of the birds that he selected or rejected. He explained how well the bird met the standard for that breed. He took his time and made explanations for his decisions. It was a very educational experience to watch Michael ,the master at work. It gave all spectators an opportunity to watch as the cream of the crop was rising to the top. By the time the show ended, Michael had selected a magnificent Budapest Stork , bred and owned by Piergiorgi/Ferrara lofts. This bird later went on to be judged Best of Show over the 2250 birds shown at the Reading Show. My congratulations to the Piergiorgi/Ferrara lofts for breeding such a magnificent specimen which represents perfection in meeting the standard of this breed. At the presentation of the award of Best In Show, the judge stated that this bird was the best Budapest Tumbler he had ever seen.

Before showing the results of the show, I would like to state that this show did represent what can be achieved when three top Shortface clubs can come together in cooperation and friendship under a competent judge, and compete on a level playing field. The best birds can and do win under these conditions, and the focus can remain on the birds, and not on the political and competitive issues that have plagued our hobby in the past. If we are to continue to improve our birds and our hobby, it is imperative that we put aside our political differences and work together in friendship and cooperation. This show proved that it can be done.
